In 2017, 2-year-old Jozef Dudek died when the drawers of an Ikea dresser collapsed on him in his home in California, United States.
The piece of furniture, which weighs around 32 kilos, was removed from the market a year earlier due to a safety alert following the death of three other minors.
Feldman Shepherd, the law firm representing the Dudek family, said in a statement that the payment is the largest settlement ever reached for a wrongful death involving a child in U.S. history.
CSR crisis at Ikea: it will pay 46 million dollars to a family
In a press release, Ikea apologized:
While no settlement can alter the tragic Chile Mobile Number List events that brought us here, for the sake of the family and everyone involved, we are grateful that this litigation has reached a resolution.
“ Product safety is a priority for Ikea and is at the core of the design process every day. “Again, we offer our most sincere condolences to the family,” the spokesperson added.
For their part, the family says they were devastated by the loss of their son.
«We never thought that a 2-year-old child could make a 30-inch-high dresser overturn and crush him . "Only later did we learn that the furniture was unstable by design."

Withdrawal from the market
In 2016, Ikea said it would remove millions of pieces of furniture from the market due to a safety alert. It was the largest product recall in the company's history.
The company initially advised customers to use a wall mount for these pieces of furniture, but the death of a third child caused Ikea to decide to remove them.
It was in December of that year that the company chose to pay $50 million after the death of those little ones.
“ Yet, millions of unsafe older models of closets remain in the homes of consumers across the country ,” said Feldman Shepherd, who represented the victim families in the previous cases.
There have been eight reports of child deaths involving Ikea chests and dressers so far, according to the company's US website.
What solution has Ikea given?
Ikea has committed to selling in the United States only drawers that meet – or exceed – voluntary national safety standards for clothing storage units.
As part of the settlement, it also agreed to expand its outreach to consumers about Malm's product recall.
Lawyers said the furniture maker will meet with representatives of Parents Against Tip-Overs, an advocacy group that advocates for safer furniture designs and stricter testing standards.
The company also says it has taken steps to educate parents about the risk of furniture tipping over accidentally and adds that it is working to resolve the problem.
